The ending of Solaris

Apologies to Tarkovsky purists, many of which will argue there is no such novelty as a twist in any of his movies, but in this one, there is: Solaris the planet is covered by a sentient, intelligent being that takes the form of an ocean (or IS the planet, fine) — in the final shot Kelvin has returned to his father’s house. As the camera pulls back, it’s revealed the house is on an island in the midd le of the ocean on Solaris, meaning Kelvin has instead chosen to live within his memories, rather than in reality.
