The ending of Citizen Kane

The final word whispered by Kane is ‘Rosebud’ — as he says it, it's not clear what it means. But the camera shows the viewer, panning across the vast amount of material possessions Kane had amassed and hoarded over his life, being burnt and discarded after his death.

One shot focuses in on a sled as being thrown into a furnace, with the name 'Rosebud' on it. So, at the end, Kane longed for his childhood, despite his massive fame and wealth. And that’s probably the most understated explanation of Citizen Kane in existence.
