The Territory’s first permanent tangle bins are being installed in popular fishing spots around Darwin and Palmerston in an effort to reduce and recycle fishing waste.
The bins will be set up across eight areas for fishos to dispose of used fishing line, hooks and bait packaging which will be recycled by OzFish Unlimited through their Tackle Loop initiative.
OzFish NT Project Officer Ruby Hatfield said she was enthusiastic about the impact of the program.
“While the vast majority of fishers take pride in making sure that rubbish associated with their
fishing is disposed of appropriately, these bins make it easier than ever, with the added bonus of the potential to recycle those items into new products instead of it going to landfill,” she said.
“By installing tangle bins and recycling fishing materials, we’re making a positive impact on the environment while engaging the community in responsible fishing practices.”
OzFish will be working in collaboration with the Amateur Fishermen’s Association NT with funding from the NT recreational fishing grants scheme to deliver the project.
AFANT chief executive David Ciaravolo said his organisation was pleased to partner with OzFish on the scheme.
“Most fishers see themselves as stewards of our environment, so we look forward to working with OzFish on this initiative and will be actively promoting opportunities for fishers to get involved,” he said.
OzFish is seeking volunteers to help monitor, empty and maintain the tangle bins.
