Top tips to save money this Christmas

Territorians are being encouraged to support their local fishmonger by taking advantage of the seafood on offer to have the freshest catch on their table this Christmas.

Top picks this season include prawns, mud crabs, tropical snappers, Spanish mackerel and barramundi – all of which are in good supply.

Mr Barra manager Laura Luchetti said Friday through Sunday was the best time to get your seafood fresh in time for Christmas Day.

“Friday through Sunday is the best time to buy, so we’re open over the three days, extended trading hours with all our fresh produce coming in Friday, which will hold until Monday,” she said.

Ms Luchetti said local always tasted better which was why it was important to support the people that are delivering your food fresh.

“It’s something that we’re really proud of in the shop, stocking a lot of NT products from fresh to frozen to dry goods to all across Australia,” she said.

“Everything’s coming in fresh and we source a lot of wild caught or we source sustainably farmed produce.”

She also said you couldn’t go wrong sticking to classic seafood staples such as prawns and oysters.

“Go simple, simple is better so cooked prawns, fresh oysters and local, fresh fish like your jew fish and your regular snapper.”

Business Minister Joel Bowden encouraged all Territorians to “hook into NT caught seafood” and buy local.

“Local producers work even harder than usual to meet the demand for high quality and delicious Territory seafood and produce at this time of year,” he said.

“We are spoiled for choice with our local options and I encourage everyone to support local, especially this time of year.”

In 2020 the NT Seafood Council launched their campaign ‘Support NT Caught’ to make it easier to shop local by looking out for the blue logo in shops and restaurants across the Top End.
