Urgent recall on spinach and salad products in Tasmania

Multiple prepacked spinach and salad products recalled over contamination fears.

A number of spinach and mixed salad products across multiple Australian states, including Tasmania, have been recalled by health authorities over gastro fears.

The potential presence of shiga-toxin-producing E. coli [STEC] contamination has led to the recall of several Coles and IGA products with use-by dates up to April 9, 2025

Public Health Specialist Medial Advisor Dr Shannon Melody said STEC was detected in two pre-packaged, ready-to-eat spinach products purchased from separate Queensland supermarkets.

She said retailers had precautiously extended recalls while further investigations were underway into the source of the contamination.

“No illnesses have been linked to the recalled products, however these recalls are a proactive measure to protect consumers,” said Dr Melody.

“Food products contaminated with STEC may cause illness if consumed. It can cause gastroenteritis, or ‘gastro’, resulting in serious illness in about 10 per cent of cases, especially very young children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems.”

People have been advised to not consume any recalled products and to dispose of products or return recalled items to the place of purchase for a full refund.

If these products have been consumed and raises any concerns, it’s advised to seek medical help.
