An additional 1200 new homes will be built in Tasmania over the next five years after a deal between Senator Tammy Tyrrell and the federal government.

The Jacqui Lambie Network Senator and her party leader have struck a deal with the Albanese government to back the Housing Australia Future Fund.

The fund proposes to spend up to $500m a year to deliver up to 30,000 affordable homes nationwide but has struggled to gain support from the Senate crossbenches.

Ms Tyrrell said she had negotiated with the government to put a floor on the number of new homes each state receives, lifting Tasmania’s share from an expected total of around 600 to 1200.

“This is a massive victory for Tasmania,” she said.

“I’ve worked hard to make sure Tassie gets our fair share with these 1,200 affordable homes over the next five years.

“Without this guarantee, we’d be looking at maybe 600 homes, depending on how the market performs.

“This guarantee doubles the number of homes Tasmania will receive, in the same amount of time, regardless of the performance of the Future Fund.

“Those extra 600 I’ve secured are enough to house every Tasmanian sleeping rough tonight.”

Minister for Housing Julie Collins said getting the legislation through federal parliament would deliver results for people struggling to find affordable homes.

“The Albanese Government wants people across Australia to benefit from our Government’s housing agenda, including the Housing Australia Future Fund, and that is what I am delivering today,” she said.

“Under the previous government, some states and territories missed out on funding or didn’t get a share.

“We won’t repeat the mistakes of the previous government. No state or territory should miss out on desperately needed homes.

“This decision will benefit all Australians, meaning the significant opportunities of the Housing Australia Future Fund and the government’s housing agenda are shared across the country.”

“I welcome new support for the Housing Australia Future Fund and call on the Coalition and Greens political party to support this vital legislation so it can pass the parliament.”

The new housing will be funded through returns on a $10bln investment fund and is intended to deliver new social and affordable rental homes including homes for women and children impacted by family and domestic violence and older women.
