Iconic seafood pioneer Jill Mure has died aged 82, her family has confirmed.

“It is with great love and sadness that we announce that founder Jill Mure passed away peacefully on Friday,” her family wrote in a statement posted to the Mures Tasmania Facebook page.

“George and Jill Mure first opened Mures Fish House in Battery Point in 1973, and together they established our iconic hook-to-plate practice.

“While George went fishing for the best local species, Jill would run the restaurant and transform the latest catch into delicious dishes for their guests.”

“Together they pioneered Tasmania’s Blue Eye Trevalla industry — a species that continues to be beloved by locals to this day, Tasmania’s first commercial mussel farm, and of course Mures Fish Centre now located at Victoria Dock on the Hobart waterfront.”

When George died in 2003, Jill handed the business over to children Will and Sarah and today Mures is led by Will and Jude Mure and children Eve, Wilson and Jock.

“We take this moment to celebrate the incredible life of Jill and her contribution to all that is Mures today,” her family said.

“Her passion, values and ethos will continue to be carried forward by our family now and in future generations to come.”

A private funeral will be held for Jill.
