An “icy polar blast” sweeping across the Apple Isle transformed parts of the state into a winter wonderland, bringing large amounts of snow to alpine areas.
But Weatherzone is tipping a brief reprieve from the frosty conditions Thursday before another run of chilly nights next week.
“Strong west-to-southwest winds brought by a powerful cold front, along with cooling showers, will emphasise the cold and make it feel between three to seven degrees colder than actual temperature over the next couple of days,” Weatherzone forecasters said.
“Chilly mornings will take hold into the weekend as this polar airmass slowly dissipates and high pressure brings clearer skies and lighter winds.”
Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to about 4 degrees on Thursday morning, with another run of colder nights from early next week as cloud covers parts of the state.
Ben Lomond Alpine Resort reported a decent dumping of fresh snow overnight Tuesday.
“Woke up to the mountain absolutely coated in fresh snow! We’re calling it 20cm on average,” the ski resort posted on social media.
“Conditions are looking prime for the week ahead once the wind dies down.”
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting more snow for Thursday, with a high chance of showers in the far south.
“Winds are forecast to slowly ease through Thursday as a ridge builds over the state from a high over Victoria,” the Bureau said.
“The ridge is forecast to be very slow moving and remain in place over Tasmania until at least Saturday.”
