Most football games are measured by the result on the ground, however two played at North Hobart Oval on Sunday meant so much more.

Tasmania Police claimed the bragging rights over the Tasmania Prison Service in an annual match between the services that raises money for Police Legacy Tasmania and SPEAK UP, Stay ChatTY.

Commander Jason Elmer, who is the president of the Tasmania Police Football Club, said Tasmania Police used the match as a practice ahead of a national police football tournament that’s held in October every year.

“The game was played hard and really competitively, even if the score didn’t reflect that,” he said.

Despite a smaller pool of staff to draw from, the prison service fielded a men’s and women’s teams.

Players and support for both services arrived from all corners of Tasmania to participate and lend a hand.

The charity game is in its fourth year and Commander Elmer said the community and sponsors had jumped right on board.

“There were quite a few people through the gate and it was a really successful day,” he said.

“The Police Legacy, obviously from a police perspective, is a great cause to give to as it supports kids of officers,

“Speak Up Stay ChatTY, we’ve been building a relationship with them since the first game. In both professions, people have challenges in their role.”

He said the “fantastic” charity to support due to their work in the mental health space.

Money raised at the gate from gold coin donations and further funds raised through a raffle will be donated to the charities.
