Meth allegedly seized during Spirit of Tasmania search

1.45pm: A 43-year-old man who was a foot passenger on the Spirit of Tasmania was allegedly stopped from bringing in 50 grams of methylamphetamine into Devonport.

Officers allege they caught the Blackmans Bay man carrying the drugs during a search at the ferry terminal on Wednesday night.

They claim the amount of meth had the potential for 500 street deals.

The man was arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance along with other minor drug offences, police said.

He was bailed to appear in Devonport Magistrates Court on June 10.

Charges laid over man’s death at New Town

February 27, 10am: Three people have been charged with perverting justice in relation to a fatal incident in New Town in September last year, police say.

Officers said a man in his 50s was found unconscious and critically injured on Swanston St about 2.50am on September 6.

He later died in hospital, having been transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

At the time of the incident, police believed that the man had been on the roadway when he was struck by a 4WD.

Police said an extensive investigation had led them to summonsing three people — a 43-year-old woman, a 47-year-old man and a 38-year-old man — to court charged with perverting justice.

They are set to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on April 2.

Erratic, dangerous driving on Bruny Island under investigation

February 26, 10.20am: A man is in custody following reports of allegedly driving erratically on Bruny Island on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers say they responded to reports of a black Volkswagen Tiguan being driven erratically shortly before 3pm.

Police allege finding the car shortly before 4.30pm. Officers said the driver allegedly evaded police and drove at them to avoid being apprehended.

No one was injured from the incident.

The driver was soon found at the Dennes Point boat ramp and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

With investigations now underway, police are urging anyone who saw the vehicle being driven, or dashcam, to contact South East Criminal Investigation Branch on 131 444 and quote ESCAD243-25022025.

Elsewhere in an unrelated incident, Bridgewater detectives charged a 24-year-old man with a serious of offences following a recent planned police operation.

Police alleged the man was involved in a significant number of firearms burglaries and associated offending in Colebrook and Campania during January and February this year.

Officers said the man was arrested in Rosny on Tuesday and several search warrants were subsequently executed across Hobart’s eastern shore.

Police allege uncovering electronic exhibits, ammunition and a reportedly stolen motorbike from the raids.

The young man’s charges include aggravated burglary, motor vehicle stealing, firearms and traffic offences.

He is set to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

Pedestrian struck near Grove store

UPDATE 3.51pm: The pedestrian has been taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital via ambulance, with injuries not reported to be life-threatening.

3.29pm: A pedestrian has been struck at a Huon Valley intersection, with emergency services in attendance.

Police said they are currently attending an accident at the intersection of Huon Highway and Mountain River Road at the Grove Store.

The south bound lane towards Huonville is currently closed, with a traffic detour through Dip Road.

Woman dead after single-vehicle crash in Derby

February 24, 8.06am: A woman has died following a single-vehicle crash in Derby on Sunday afternoon.

The woman in her 30s was the sole occupant of the vehicle that crashed on the Tasman Highway just after 1pm.

Police and emergency services were called to the area after reports a vehicle had crashed. but unfortunately the driver died at the scene.

Police said investigations into the crash are ongoing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Man charged after allegedly assaulting store staff member

February 23, 2.19pm: A Launceston man has been arrested by Tasmania Police after he allegedly assaulted a gift shop staff member while stealing.

A 46-year-old man was arrested and charged by Northern Criminal Investigation Branch detectives on Friday the same day as he targeted Brisbane Street Arcade business Card Castle.

Police state the man allegedly attended the Card Castle on Saturday where he stole $400 cash from the register and assaulted a staff member during the commission of the theft.

The male was charged with stealing with force among minor drug offences, family violence offences and offences against police and appeared in after-hours court on Saturday.

Tasmania Police are urging the public to provide any information on “suspicious activity”, stating they “rely on the community to share information”.

Claremont man charged with grievous bodily harm to baby

February 21: A 24-year-old Claremont man has been charged with allegedly causing grievous bodily harm to a baby.

Police said a baby was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital on Thursday night with significant head injuries.

The baby remains in hospital in a serious condition.

The hospital contacted police in relation to the matter.

Glenorchy police are investigating and have since declared a Claremont home a crime scene.

Police understand the man is known to the baby.

He is set to appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court at 10am today.

Arson charges laid over West Launceston unit fire

February 20: A 52-year-old woman has been charged with arson, accused of lighting a West Launceston unit on fire while she and a man were still inside.

Police say they were alerted to the blaze at Merrys Lane by the man who managed to escape the fire without injuries about 10.30pm Wednesday.

Crews from Launceston and Prospect fire brigades responded and doused the fire.

Police say the damage is estimated to cost $400,000.

Officers say the woman was also in the house when the fire was deliberately lit was arrested by police.

Further investigation has determined the fire was allegedly deliberately lit.

The 52-year-old with no fixed address has been charged and is set to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court tonight.

Victorian motorcyclist dies after crashing into tree, police say

February 19: A 55-year-old Victorian man who was riding his motorcycle in the state’s north has tragically died.

Police believe the man was travelling north on Highland Lake Rd, Liffey when his motorcycle left the road and crashed with a tree.

Emergency services responded to the incident shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics attending the crash attempted to treat the rider, who died before they could transport him to hospital, officers say.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Car fire shuts down Launceston CBD street

2.11pm: A car on fire has shut down a Launceston CBD street on Tuesday afternoon, with motorists asked to avoid the area.

Tall flames can be seen coming from the white car parked on St Johns Street between Cimitiere and Patterson Streets.

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area until the scene is cleared.

Four vehicles seized after police investigation into Tas aged care provider

1.38pm: A West Tamar man has had three vehicles seized from his home, alleged to have stolen from his former aged care employer.

Tasmania Police on Tuesday said a 55-year-old man had been charged with three counts of stealing and two counts of fraud, following an investigation relating to his former employment at a northern Tasmanian aged care provider.

In December 2024, police executed a search warrant at a West Tamar address, and seized three vehicles.

Following further investigation, police seized a fourth vehicle in Victoria last Friday.

Police said the man was arrested on Monday and charged with three counts of stealing, and two counts of fraud.

He has been bailed to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court on May 19.

Death following January Exeter crash

February 18, 12.18pm: Police confirmed on Tuesday that a Northern Tasmanian woman died following a January two-vehicle crash.

Police say the 78-year-old woman was driving a red Suzuki Hatch on Main Road Exeter on January 7 when it allegedly pulled out of a car park and struck a delivery truck.

Following the crash, police said the woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition and has since passed away.

The road was closed for four hours to allow crash investigators to examine the scene and conduct inquiries.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Two teenagers charged after allegedly evade in stolen car

February 16: Police have charged two female teenagers with a raft of offences after they allegedly evaded police in a stolen car.

Officers allege an 18-year-old and a 13-year-old stole a white Holden Commodore from the Devonport area on Saturday morning.

Police say after spotting the car at around 2.10pm, the pair allegedly refused to stop and were caught 10 minutes later on William Street where they were both arrested.

It’s understood both teenagers were known to police.

The 18-year-old was charged with motor vehicle stealing, resisting police, assaulting police, aggravated evade and breach of bail and was detained to appear in court.

She also allegedly kicked police several times while being arrested but no officer sustained any injuries, police said.

The 13-year-old was bailed to appear in court at a later date on charges of motor vehicle stealing and resisting arrest.

There was a brief disruption to traffic which was later cleared.

Driver allegedly threatened at knifepoint to drive stranger

February 14, midday: A 32-year-old Mayfield man has been charged after allegedly threatening a stranger to drive him across a Launceston suburb.

It’s alleged the man entered a vehicle on Invermay Rd, Mowbray while the driver and passenger were inside.

Police report the man then allegedly threatened the driver while in possession of a small knife.

Officers said the alleged offender was then driven to a spot on George Town Rd, where he exited the vehicle.

Police confirmed nobody was physically injured during the incident.

Police said they quickly found the man believed to be involved a short time later in Mayfield.

He was arrested and has since been charged with trespass, assault, and possess a dangerous article.

The man is set to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court in April.

Also in Launceston in a separate incident, a targeted raid at a Kings Meadows home by Taskforce Raven seized $1000 worth of stolen property and a quantity of GHB, a depressant drug.

Police said a 32-year-old man and 33-year-old woman — both from Prospect — were arrested for being in possession of property believed to be stolen.

The are expected to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date.
