Beaconsfield woman, 44, dies in fatal crash

October 5, 8am: Tragically a Beaconsfield woman, 44, has died after her car crashed into a tree on Friday afternoon.

Police say they are investigating the fatal incident that occurred on Weld St, Beaconsfield when the blue Mitsubishi driving in a southerly direction crashed into a tree.

Officers report a 20-year-old woman was walking along the roadside at the time of the crash and was also injured.

Paramedics took the woman to the Launceston General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say they will prepare a report for the coroner.

Officers also thanked members of the public who assisted both woman at the scene.

“Police offer heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased woman,” Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

P-plater caught 40km/h over the limit near Fingal

10.30am: A 21-year-old provisional licence holder will cop a large fine, demerit points and licence disqualification after going 41km/h over the limit near Fingal.

Police say they caught the P-plater on Esk Main Rd, that is sign posted 100km/h, about 1.30pm yesterday.

Divisional Sergeant Ben Kromkamp said speeding was a major contributor towards fatal and serious crashes.

“Choosing to drive at 41 km/h over the sign posted limit on any road is not only dangerous or yourself, but also for passengers in the vehicle and all other road users,” he said.

“Coupled with being an inexperienced driver, the consequences could have been disastrous had police not intercepted the vehicle.

“We will continue to patrol highways, rural roads and country areas where we know serious and fatal crashes occur to improve driver behaviour. Remember we can be anywhere anytime.”

The driver faces a penalty of a $858.50 fine, infringement notices carrying the loss of six demerit points and a three-month licence disqualification.

Allegations man stabbed after accused drove through fence

October 3, 9am: A 36-year-old Howrah man has been charged with wounding and assault after a confrontation with two others at Rokeby yesterday afternoon.

Officers allege the accused drove his vehicle through a fence towards two occupants of the home, who were standing on the front lawn.

Police report the occupants were forced to jump out of the way of the vehicle.

It’s alleged that the suspect stabbed one of the occupants in the arm when he attempted to gain entry to the vehicle.

Police investigations into the incident closed Tollard Dr between Rokeby Rd and Boyle St for hours.

The man was allegedly detained by the two occupants until police arrived shortly after.

The Howard man was charged and is expected to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court later today.
