A POPULAR Hobart food market is eager to expand its offerings over the colder months.

Attracting up to 5000 people each Friday evening, Street Eats @ Franko transformed Franklin Square into a hive of activity during summer and autumn.

If organisers have their way, it could also heat up the cooler months.

At Monday night’s council meeting, Hobart aldermen will vote on whether to amend the licence for the event to allow it to hold six pop-up markets from June 1 to October 31 each year in addition to its weekly operation between November 1 and May 31.

Franko founder Madi Seeber-Peattie said if successful, they would start with an event on October 20 to celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali.

“We are only going to start with one in October this year if the licence is amended. But next year who knows?” she said.

“It was amazing how successful the first year actually was. I’ve been in events for 12 years and I have never seen such a response.”

Ms Seeber-Peattie said if they decided to hold winter pop-up markets, they would be noticeably different to the summer ones.

We are only going to start with one in October this year if the licence is amended. But next year who knows?

“It won’t be a normal Street Eats. It would be themed accordingly,” she said.

“Even the food would be different and themed.

“We can’t replicate a summer product, we have to embrace winter.”

Hobart Lord Mayor Sue Hickey said Franko being held in winter would be a tremendous result for the city.

“It will be exciting because she [Ms Seeber-Peattie] is such a professional operator,” Ald Hickey said.

“A winter market like that would be fantastic for the city.”

T he first Street Eats @ Franko market for this summer will be held in November.
