The first tranche of political donations to be revealed under Tasmania’s new disclosure rules have been made public by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.
This is the first state election to be covered by the new rules set out in the Electoral Disclosure and Funding Act, which requires the declaration of all donations over $1000 form July 1.
The register reveals nearly $200,000 in donations made in the first week of the scheme’s operation.
The Liberal led the fundraising stakes with $60,772 in donations, Labor received $54,821 and the Greens $39,450 in the last two weeks.
Independent Franklin candidate Peter George was the beneficiary of $14,000 in support from individual donors.
The register shows donations of $30,000 to the Labor Party from the Plumbing and Pipe Trades Employees Union, $11,000 to the Liberals from the Cement Industry Foundation, $10,000 to the Greens from Paul Thomas and $10,000 to the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers from Hospitality Tasmania.
Former Premier Lara Giddings made eight $100 Labor donations to candidates and $200 to her party.
And Liberal MP Eric Abetz received donations of $3100 from developers Mary Ann’s Island Pty Ltd and $1000 from Mitchell Plastic Welding.
Greens Leader Rosalie Woodruff said the list revealed that pokies industry donations were once again flowing to Labor and Liberal politicians in an election campaign.
“The Electoral Commission’s donations’ register tells the story of grubby political money in real time.
“Thousands of dollars have been handed over to Labor, the Liberals and even the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party after the 1 July disclosure date.
“Of course, we don’t know what money changed hands before 30 June.
“The influence of the pokies lobby over the major parties has been clear again in recent times, with both abandoning the desperately needed pokies pre-commitment card.
Once again, we are seeing the Liberals and Labor raking in donations from this damaging industry. It’s appalling.”
