Shocking dashcam footage has captured the moment a car narrowly avoided being hit by a truck, after an attempt to overtake vehicle in wet conditions went horribly wrong.
The crash occurred on May 23 around 4pm, when the driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle while trying to overtake on the Huon Highway, towards Castle Forbes Bay.
Police say the Ford Falcon ute struck the vehicle it was initially tailing, before rolling and coming to rest on its roof.
The car was able to avoid the path of an oncoming truck.
The driver, a 19-year-old Franklin man, has been charged with negligent driving.
Police say the incident could have ended in tragedy.
“When you add wet roads and reduced visibility to driver inexperience, the outcome of this crash could have been fatal,” Tasmania Police Inspector Colin Riley said.
“Luckily, no injuries were sustained in the crash.”
Inspector Riley said the ute was driven by a P-plater.
“Unfortunately, provisional drivers are overrepresented in serious and fatal crashes on our roads,” he said.
“I urge all motorists, especially provisional drivers, to slow down and pay attention on the roads – we want everyone to get to their destination safely.”
