Richmond’s popularity among visitors comes as no surprise to locals.
The iconic Coal Valley River town was named the most photographed Aussie town in recent analysis on Instagram and Pintrest by mortgagebroker.com.au.
The historical Richmond Bridge built by convicts in the 1820s is the backdrop to many snaps, while the town’s Georgian architecture is another drawcard.
Coal River Valley Local Tourism Association president Katrina Williams said it was wonderful recognition.
“It’s something we can proudly wear as a badge of honour,” Mrs Williams said.
Richmond is a beautiful, picturesque town located in the Coal River Valley.
“It’s only a short drive from Hobart and a quaint little town that has fantastic tourism attractions.”
Also co-owner of Wattlebanks Catering, she said local businesses regularly shared that the town’s bridge was a nice place for photos.
Recent major events, such as the town’s bicentennial celebrated last October and Dark Mofo photo competitions, would have helped boost Richmond’s social media presence, Mrs Williams said.
It’s not the only claim to fame Richmond has gained recently, having claimed bronze in the small town category in the Australian Top Tourism Awards.
“It’s a wonderful accolade for something we already know, that it’s a picturesque, lovely place to live and work,” she said.
TCIT chief executive Amy Hills said the town’s tourist appeal was going from strength to strength.
“Its heritage, natural beauty, local community and charm are always on full display and they are what makes it so special and popular among visitors but also Tasmanians,” Ms Hills said.
“Of course having those picture perfect moments for people to capture helps spread the word far and wide.”
With school holidays around the corner, the town is expecting to be buzzing.
Ms Hills said there was always something new to explore in local towns such as Richmond.
While Mrs Williams said there was plenty on offer over the holiday period.
Full of rich history and colonial buildings, the quaint town has had a total of 4.9 million hashtags and pins on Pinterest, according to MortgageBroker.com.au.
The next closest had 3.4 million social posts.
