New McDonalds at Prospect ticks off boxes to march ahead

Launceston is edging closer to having the same number of McDonalds restaurants as Hobart’s five.
The chain has passed a major hurdle to opening a new joint at Prospect Vale after the development secured the nod of approval from the Meander Valley Council.
The proposal for the city’s fourth McDonald’s is for a 24-hour operation at the former Jim’s Service Station on Westbury Rd.
At a meeting last Tuesday, the development was passed with 33 conditions attached.
Those conditions related to a number of issues raised during public consultation such as smell, traffic, noise and contamination from the former fuel site.
The drive through will be open between 6am to 11pm, despite opposition from the two councillors who voted against the development — who wanted to restrict it by an hour to 10pm.
A McDonald’s representative was present at the meeting, while three Meander Valley residents opposing the development were also present.
Those who spoke against the proposal had raised issues in their written submissions during public consultation in June, each concerned with the impact it would have on the nearby units and houses.
The development of the new McDonald’s venue is expected to cost $4.5m.
