National Trust Tasmania says managing director Scott Carlin will leave the organisation.

Mr Carlin’s departure was in a statement issued by the charity on Tuesday night.

National Trust Board chair Catherine Walker said the Trust was “refining its strategic focus to align with emerging opportunities in tourism and commercial development”.

No reason was given for the decision behind Mr Carlin’s departure and he could not be reached for comment.

“The National Trust Tasmania Board today announced that Scott Carlin will conclude his tenure as Managing Director at the end of his current contract on 6 March 2025,” the statement said.

“Scott has been a valued leader of the National Trust Tasmania, bringing dedication and passion to the role throughout his time with the organisation.

“Under Scott’s leadership, the Trust has made strides in raising awareness of Tasmania’s cultural heritage and improving the visitor experience at several key sites.

“Scott’s work has played an important role in strengthening the foundations of the National Trust Tasmania.

“His dedication to heritage conservation and community engagement has been greatly appreciated.”

The Tasmanian branch of the Trust was formed in 1960 and manages eleven historic properties across Tasmania.

It has an annual budget of around $3.6m and recorded a surplus of $91,000 for the 2023/24 financial year, down from $911,300 the previous year.

It receives around $1.3m in government funding annually.

Mr Carlin’s salary package was $144,113 in 2024, up from $139,608 the year before.

The statement said the search was on for someone to replace him.

“The Board will begin the process of identifying a new leader who will help guide the organisation in this next phase of growth and innovation,” the statement said.
