A down to earth dairy farmer from Sheffield will be flying the flag for Tasmania as next week’s surprise addition to Farmer Wants a Wife, all thanks to a cheeky move by his mum.

Jack, 26, who runs a family dairy farm in the North West, is set to appear on the Channel 7 show on Monday night after his mother signed him up for the show without his knowledge.

“Funnily enough, it was actually my mum who signed me up,” Jack told the Mercury.

“I didn’t initially have the idea myself, but mum signed me up and I found out and I thought I’d give it a crack.”

The laid-back farmer said the experience was well outside his comfort zone, but was ultimately glad he took part in the journey.

“It was a little bit nerve-racking because usually I’m pretty quiet and reserved,” he said.

“Pretty early on I decided to just embrace it and enjoy it for what it was. And I’m glad I did that because I did enjoy it from then on.”

Jack and his family have been milking cows near Sheffield for 15 years, with the show largely filmed on their farm.

“We all work together when we need to, it’s just a family business and we all love it,” he said.

Originally from South Australia, Jack has lived most of his life in Tasmania and said it was a proud moment to represent the state on a show where Tassie farmers have rarely featured.

“We’re definitely a little under-represented in Tassie on the show, so I was pretty proud to get on it,” he said.

Jack said the experience was unforgettable, admitting to feeling a “bit starstruck” from meeting host Natalie Gruzlewski.

“I’d love it if locals could watch it and enjoy it and hopefully see some places that they recognise,” he said.

“Mum was ecstatic when I got the call, she’ll definitely be watching it avidly.”

Farmer Jack joins Farmer Wants a Wife on May 26.
