A new food truck is becoming a staple on the state’s summer events circuit and serving up authenticity in more ways than one.
Get Greek is the love child of Mahali and Jane Karagiannis as well as a bevy of local producers, suppliers and staff.
With their five young children in tow, the couple first hit the road last month to a rapturous reception.
“Our first trade was at the Surges Bay Christmas market and I got really emotional,” Mr Karagiannis said.
“We’ve been blown away by the reception. Everyone’s asking for us.”
Owning and operating his own food truck serving the Greek meals he ate growing up had been a lifelong dream for Mr Karagiannis, but authenticity is not isolated to the menu.
“I treat our customers as family,” he said.
“It’s not just a truck — it’s our kitchen like you’re eating here at our dining table.”
Along with takeaway staples like gyros and loaded fries, the menu features classics such as kalamaki – charcoal grilled skewers – Greek style rice, loukoumades and a range of homemade dips.
“We’re spoiled here with our Tassie produce so we do love to support local and let the food speak for itself,” Mr Karagiannis said.
“We keep it real and simple because it’s food you eat every day. It’s what we give to our children.”
Their jam-packed summer schedule includes stops at the Salamanca Twilight Markets and the Tasmanian Wine Festival, as well as numerous weddings and an eventual trip up to Burnie.
But some of their most memorable events so far have been right outside their door in Garrington Park, New Town.
“It’s just awesome to see how food can bring the local community together,” Ms Karagiannis said.
“It’s a movement,” Mr Karagiannis added.
“And everyone knows us — we’re a tight-knit family. We come as a package wherever we go.”
