HOBART Lord Mayor Sue Hickey has chastised fellow alderman Anna Reynolds for comments she made about a lack of correspondence from the State Government over its decision to acquire land for the cable car project.

At an at-times robust council meeting last night, Ald Hickey said Ald Reynolds had been telling “fallacies” that the Government had only written to Hobart general manager Nick Heath once in regards to its move to introduce legislation so it could acquire land on kunanyi/Mt Wellington to help get the cable car project off the ground.

In a radio interview before last night’s meeting, Ald Reynolds said the Government had not bothered to respond to a letter from the council requesting more information about its decision last month.

But Ald Hickey said the council received a letter on February 27, which explained the process, and the council would meet the Government in coming weeks.

“I was a little disappointed about Ald Reynolds’ views being on the radio,” Ald Hickey said.

“Especially the fallacies that the general manager did not get a letter from the State Government — on the 27th of February a holding letter came back.”

The heated exchange came as aldermen debated whether to accept an urgent motion submitted by Ald Reynolds to make a public statement opposing the Government’s plan.

The majority of aldermen voted to not accept the motion, with the issue likely to be discussed again later this month.

Ald Eva Ruzicka said there was not enough information for the council to make an informed decision and any discussion could affect its status as a planning authority.

Ald Jeff Briscoe said he did not believe the Government was fully behind the project because it had not made it a project of state significance.

Ald Marti Zucco said the council needed to see the Government’s plans before it could discuss the issue.

Ald Philip Cocker said the land acquisition was just another attack on local government.
