Mariners warning after fishing boat sinks at Sandy Bay

Authorities have confirmed an 11-metre timber vessel has sunk in the River Derwent on Sunday.

To the backdrop of a gloomy grey sky, an 11-metre timber boat sunk in the River Derwent near Sandy Bay’s Wrest Point Casino on Sunday.

It’s understood the incident happened about midday.

Marine and Safety Tasmania put out a notice to mariners of the sunken vessel on Sunday afternoon.

They warned floating debris might be present in the immediate area.

“Mariners should navigate the area with caution,” MAST said.

Photos show the vessel fully submerged.

A Facebook user posted on the social media platform that the vessel could be seen from the casino’s bistro sinking about 12.30pm.
