Male motorcyclist has died in the south after police tried to intercept him

A male motorcyclist has died in a crash on Hobart’s Eastern Shore this morning after police had earlier tried to intercept the rider.

A police professional standards investigation will be held into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident happened about 12.30am near the Warrane overpass on the Tasman Highway.

Police say they had tried to intercept the motorcycle a short time earlier at the Shoreline Roundabout to Howrah.

A police spokesperson says while the investigation is in its early stages, evidence suggests that the police vehicle was not in the immediate vicinity of the motorcycle, or under lights and sirens, at the time of the crash.

The motorcyclist died at the scene.

Police and emergency services remain on the scene, with the Tasman Highway between the Mornington Roundabout and the Rosny exit to remain expected to be closed for some time to allow crash scene investigations to be conducted.

Diversions are in place whilst the investigation is ongoing

Motorists are required to divert via Rosny Hill Road and Cambridge Road. The highway is currently blocked in both directions.

Traffic coming from the Airport direction will have to divert at the Mornington Roundabout / Flagstaff Gully road overpass onto Cambridge Road and Rosny Hill road and re connect with the Tasman Highway just prior to the Tasman Bridge.

Police are calling for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
