A four-year-old child struck by a vehicle at Claremont on Tuesday has tragically died at the Royal Hobart Hospital on Thursday evening.

The young child was struck after running out onto the road in Claremont about 1pm Tuesday.

An off-duty doctor happened to be passing by at the time, and they treated the child while ambulances were called to the scene.

Several neighbours heard the crash and also came running to provide assistance.

Senior Sergeant Karl Krelle said at this stage it did not appear as though the driver of the white car was speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

He said the driver, a female in her 40s, was “extremely shaken” by what had happened and would be offered support.

“It’s a tragic, tragic set of circumstances for any parent or any driver on the road,” Snr Sgt Krelle said.

“Children are unpredictable and we need to make sure as drivers on the road, and as parents, that we look after our children because roadways are very dangerous places.”

The girl was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition, with police confirming she had passed away on Thursday night.

Tasmania Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

UPDATE 5.45AM, Friday - September 24:

An elderly Ulverstone woman has sadly died in hospital following a single vehicle crash yesterday afternoon.

The 84-year-old was the driver of the vehicle when it struck a power pole around 1:45pm on Heathcote Street at Ulverstone.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact Tasmania Police on 131444.

INITIAL: An elderly woman is fighting for life after reversing his car into a power pole on a suburban street in the North West.

Tasmania Police said the 85-year-old was attempting to reverse out of his driveway on Heathcote Street in Ulverstone when her vehicle lurched aggressively backward and crashed into a power pole at ‘high velocity’.

Critical response paramedics rushed to the scene to treat the driver before she was transported for emergency care at the Northwest Regional Hospital.

Woman charged for allegedly trafficking $200,000 of ice - Thursday, September 23

A Goodwood woman has been charged for allegedly trafficking $200,000 worth of methylamphetamine.

Kellie Maree Rhodes, 38, was arrested yesterday as part of a three month police operation following the search of a Goodwood home where two shortened firearms were also seized.

The woman appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon facing charges including trafficking in a controlled substance, possessing a firearm and ammunition without the appropriate firearms licence.

Ms Rhodes’ defence lawyer Dinesh Loganathan said his client would not apply for bail.

He sought an adjournment.

Magistrate Sam Mollard remanded Ms Rhodes in custody to appear in the Supreme Court on Friday.

He adjourned her charges to reappear in the Hobart Magistrates Court next Thursday, where she is expected to plead.

Shortly before court proceedings began on Thursday, Detective Acting Inspector Mathew Adams said the disruption of the syndicate was a step in the right direction to ensure illicit drugs were kept off local streets.

“Every ‘street deal’ seized by police counts. It’s one less ‘deal’ of illicit substance available to our families, friends and our community,” Detective Acting Inspector Adams said.

“Police not only work hard to seize illicit substances, they also work to disrupt syndicates and networks responsible for the distribution of them.”

Investigator Tim McKay said the fire spread rapidly and caused extensive damage to the home costing around $500,000.

“While thankfully the occupants of the house were not home at the time of the fire last night, this is an opportune time to remind everyone of the importance of having a well-rehearsed evacuation plan and to ensure that all homes are fitted with working smoke alarms,” said McKay.

“While there is nothing to suggest the appliance which caused last night’s fire was not in good working condition prior to the fire, I do encourage people to ensure that all household appliances are regularly checked to ensure they are in good working order.”
