Georgina Richmond has long been entranced by the beauty of Tasmania.
“For me there’s not just this visual attachment but an emotional one,” she said.
“To have accessible, unspoiled wilderness on our doorstep is so unusual.”
The emotional connection is evident within her latest work, The Foothills of Kunanyi, created for the Kunanyi Reflections Exhibition which is currently open at Hobart’s Sunroom Gallery.
The oil painting captures Ms Richmond’s view of the mountain during her regular evening walks, where at the end of the backtrack from the Waterworks Reserve she can see it in its full, almost overwhelming glory.
“I could have painted anything to do with Kunanyi, but this was a really familiar image for me to look at,” she said.
“It’s a lovely angle that takes in the light of the lake.”
But her appreciation for the mountain was evermore, she said.
“Sometimes it looks massive, sometimes there’s snow on it, sometimes it’s hidden by clouds and illuminated by sunshine and all the gumtrees are glistening.
“I love the fact it changes all the time.”
Coordinated by the Tasmanian Greens, the exhibition features a range of audio, literary and mixed media works which explore the connection between Kunanyi and the community.
For Ms Richmond, who was born in England, the exhibition seeks to raise awareness about the majesty of the mountain, and the need to protect it for future generations.
“Where I’m from there’s nothing like this, everything’s been manicured and touched,” she said.
“This is to make people aware of the beauty of our landscapes, and the need to leave it as is.”
Kunanyi Reflections is open until July 20 at the Sunroom Gallery, Hobart.
