A popular park will soon lay claim to the city’s biggest slide as construction of the 15-metre ‘Green Machine’ gets under way.

With the assistance of $140,000 in funding from the state government, the new slide at Parliament Street Reserve in Sandy Bay is expected to be opened in late March, with the area currently fenced off.

The park had previously been home to a long blue slide that was a favourite of local kids but the council had to retire it for safety reasons, Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

A number of people reported injuring themselves on the former slide.

“We’re calling [the new slide] the Green Machine – a fun, snakey tunnel slide designed for excitement and safety,” Ms Reynolds said.

“This upgrade includes natural rock landscaping, gardens, a picnic table, and improved access for families.

“Safety is a priority – the slide meets Australian standards, with an enclosed top, controlled speed, and soft-fall areas.”

The top of the new slide will be closed and there will be a number of turns in the design to help control speed.

Soft fall areas will be present at the top and bottom of the slide, while gravel paths will also be installed in the reserve, as well as large dolerite rock work.

Parliament Street Reserve is located on the corner of Parliament and King streets and features a barbecue and playground.

It also comprises the Parliament Street Oval, which is used for junior soccer.
