A man who drove 222km/h across the Bowen Bridge has copped a fine of more than $7000 and has been disqualified from driving for eight months.

Hobart man Ci Yan, 28, appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday.

He pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving, one count of exceeding the speed limit and one count of operating a vehicle in a public place in an unnecessary execution of speed.

Tasmania Police had said the man was arrested on June 4 about 1am after driving 222km/h across the Bowen Bridge, Goodwood, where the posted speed limit is 80km/h.

A conviction was recorded against Yan and he was fined $2500 and disqualified from driving for eight months.

He was ordered to pay $5000 in lieu of his car being forfeited, plus court costs and a levy.

Sergeant Robert Bessell previously said the man had been driving a white BMW M2, which was confiscated and towed from the scene.

“This incident is of great concern for Tasmania Police,” he said.

“Tasmania Police urge all motorists to consider their actions and travel within the posted speed limits to keep all road users safe. Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
