The organisers of Dark Mofo have been left stunned by unprecedented demand on the first day of ticket sales for the 2025 event, with multiple shows already having sold out as the festival prepares to return in full swing after a year off.
More than 40,000 tickets to a range of different events were purchased on Wednesday and punters were warned to expect long wait times as they queued online.
The public appears to have strongly endorsed this year’s program and it’s understood the festival is already on track to meet its box office targets.
Dark Mofo artistic director Chris Twite told the Mercury that the response had been “really phenomenal”.
“We’re so excited to see people excited to get tickets, excited to be coming to Tasmania, and for locals to be excited to come out this winter. I mean, I think we’ve all missed it and now it’s back,” he said.
“Absence makes the heart grow fonder but it’s great to see that people still support the work that we’re doing and they want to come out in the cold and the dark and look at these amazing things and gather around a fire.
“Seeing people clamouring for tickets and watching shows sell out is tremendous – audiences have spoken and Dark Mofo is back.”
Events that have already sold out include Forest Swords, AGENESIS, Keanu Nelson, MongTong, the Peep Tempel, and all three Berlin Atonal shows.
A fourth performance of Joshua Seraphin’s VOID has been added in order to meet sky-high demand, while all XYZZY sessions at the Ulverstone Planetarium are also fully booked.
“It’s fantastic for us to have our first shows up in Ulverstone as part of Dark Mofo and for [those] to be selling out,” Mr Twite said.
The ever-popular Night Mass was selling quickly, as were tickets to the Clown Core and Rival Consoles gigs.
Tickets are still available to well-known acts such as Beth Gibbons, Jessica Pratt, Alabaster DePlume, Angry Blackmen, and Lucy (Cooper B Handy), as well as Robert Ames’ performance with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, entitled To the Silent Earth, I Flow.
Free, unticketed events include Paula Garcia’s Crash Body, as well as the artworks at Dark Park and elsewhere across Hobart.
There is still an opportunity for people to book a spot at the Winter Feast and the Nude Solstice Swim.
Dark Mofo will run from June 5-15 and the Nude Solstice Swim will take place on June 21.
