The Tasmania Devils girls side will get their first opportunity to run out together when they take on Sydney Swans Academy.
The Anzac Day clash against the Swans comes in round 3 of the Coates Talent League with the Devils and Sydney both having the byes in the opening rounds.
Girls coach Jess Wuetschner said it will be good to see the team in action.
“I think the girls are sick of pre-season and just excited to get into game mode, there is a lot of hype around the girls at the moment, just can’t wait to get out there,” Wuetschner said.
“We have a really talented group and a lot more depth than we had last year.
“We lost a few key players heading into the finals which didn’t do too well for us, but I am excited to see what we can do.
“It probably takes a little bit more time to get that continuity together considering we are across a state but pretty bullish about what we can do without overselling.
“It is very important to get on the road early to get that continuity amongst the group, I feel we find the more we travel early as a group the more we connect.”
The clash at Blacktown International Sportspark will be part of a triple-header of Devils footy, with the state’s under-16 boys side playing a practice match at 9am, the girls playing at 11am, and the boys at 1.20pm.
Here’s a look at five key players this season.
Priya Bowering
Age: 18
Club: Lauderdale
One of two Devils in the AFLW Academy this year, Bowering has long been a star at under-18 level, winning Tasmania’s best and fairest award in the Talent League and earning all-Australian honours at the National Championships last season. A powerful midfielder with the ability to swing forward and kick goals, she’s a prolific ball winner and always dangerous.
Lucah Conkie
Age: 17
Club: Ulverstone
Conkie made a big statement in the NWFL Premier League last week, booting ten goals for Ulverstone in a big win. She played a different role for the Devils last season, lining up on the half back line and providing plenty of dash out of defence, with some stints in the midfield showing her ability to win the ball in close.
Mischa Barwin
Age: 17
Club: Lauderdale
Tasmania’s second AFLW Academy member, Barwin enjoyed a breakout 2024 at Talent League level, averaging 17 disposals per game and booting eight goals.
Another player able to play in the midfield and up forward, she’s a classy ball user and uses her speed and agility to find space and break lines.
Harriet Bingley
Age: 18
Club: Old Scotch
After playing largely as a forward in 2024, kicking 16 goals in 13 games, Bingley is set to add a new dynamic to Tasmania’s deep midfield rotation. With the ability to burst out of stoppages and the size to hold down a key position post, she brings a ton of flexibility for Jess Wuetschner and her coaches to utilise. It’s easy to see why she earned selection in the All-Stars line-up that took on the AFLW Academy last weekend.
Ava Read
Age: 18
Club: Clarence
After leading the Talent League Girls goalkicking last season and booting 46 goals over the last two seasons, Read returns as an overage player this year with the chance to show her versatility.
Has lined up in defence in the pre-season and shown plenty of promise as an interceptor and rebounding force from the backline.
Will likely still swing forward when needed after starring in attack for Tasmania’s Senior Talent Academy earlier this year.
