A Canadian woman was shot in the back after she was lured out of her home by a suspect disguised as a construction worker in a “targeted” attack.
Footage released by York Regional Police showed the gunman ambush the unsuspecting victim around 5.30pm in Markham, Ontario — just north of Toronto — on January 21.
The suspect parked a dark Audi A4 sedan outside the 41-year-old’s home and stood on a snow-covered footpath wearing a bright safety vest, a yellow construction helmet and a blue medical mask.
The woman had just arrived at her gated residence when she ran into the suspect.
“We see a male party that’s interacting with our victim, who is pacing back and forth in front of the house,” York Regional Police spokesperson James Dickson told CP24 News on Wednesday.
“There was a conversation that was had.”
The conversation led the victim and gunman to the edge of her driveway where she handed the man a piece of paper and a pen to make a note.
The video then cuts to the woman walking back toward her home.
As her back faced the gunman, he pulled out his gun and shot the victim once.
The gun seemingly malfunctioned, but the man fired off two more shots as the woman ran for safety.
The alleged shooter was then shown sprinting back to his vehicle, making a U-turn and leaving the area.
Miraculously, the woman was hit by only one bullet and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
She was treated at the hospital and has since been released.
Police say the victim did not know the alleged shooter and believe the incident was a targeted attack.
A search is underway for the suspect, who police described as an Asian man with a “skinny build”.
According to the Toronto Sun, the incident marks the second time a victim was shot in a “targeted” attack on the property.
The outlet reported that a man was hospitalised on June 8, 2024, stemming from a similar case which remains unsolved.
