WHITFIELD State School students got their hands dirty with volcanoes and slime in celebration of the school’s 20th science fair on Friday.

Whitfield State School hosted the event on the school’s oval with students from Trinity Bay State High School and education students from James Cook University in Smithfield.

It celebrated “all the fun” behind science with the typical slime and volcanoes.

Whitfield State School teacher and head of gifted education program Anette Ryan said it was an opportunity for students to celebrate science.

“These are the future engineers and doctors,” Ms Ryan said.

“It’s funny because you don’t have many behavioural problems when it comes to science, kids are usually pretty keen to learn.”

Senior lecturer and master of teaching and learning course co-ordinator Subhashni Taylor suspects the event will keep students interested in science for a long time to come.

“There is often a lot of fear around teaching science in the classroom, so this was an opportunity for my education students and the school students to have that raw experience with science,” Ms Taylor said.

“School students are curios and creative, and on this day we were able to harness it.

“It also offers the JCU an authentic classroom experience.”

Whitfield State School principal Matt Thompson said the day was both “vibrant and wonderful”.

“It is a chance to learn new things from interested and amazing people who want to share their love of the subject,” he said.
