Tottenham Hotspur continue their Europa League campaign.

TOTTENHAM Hotspur beat FC Sheriff 2-1 at White Hart Lane to reach the Europa League knockout stages, but British clubs Wigan Athletic and Swansea City fared badly on their travels to Russia.

Wigan were beaten 1-0 at Rubin Kazan on a goal from defender Oleg Kuzmin, while Swansea City were held to a late 1-1 draw at Kuban Krasnodar.

Wilfried Bony gave Swansea an early lead, only for Ibrahim Balde to level for Kuban in the very last minute. The hosts managed to force a draw despite having defender Alexandre Xandao sent off.

News_Image_File: Swansea City's celebrations were premature.

The draw meant Swansea were overtaken in Group A by Valencia, who scored a late 3-2 win at Swiss side St Gallen thanks to two goals from Argentine winger Pablo Piatti.

Valencia now have nine points; Swansea have eight.

Meanwhile in Group D, Rubin are top with 10 points, Wigan have five.

In other early games on Thursday, PSV Eindhoven beat Dynamo Zagreb 2-0, Fiorentina won 2-1 at Pandurii Lignitul Targu Jiu, Eintracht Frankfurt crashed 4-2 at Maccabi Tel Aviv and Bordeaux lost 2-1 at APOEL.

Meanwhile, a first Tottenham goal for Erik Lamela and a record-breaking penalty from Jermain Defoe secured safe passage for Andre Villas-Boas' side.

Tottenham Hotspur beat FC Sheriff 2-1 at White Hart Lane on Thursday night to reach the Europa League knockout stages.

A first Tottenham goal for Erik Lamela and a record-breaking penalty from Jermain Defoe secured safe passage for Andre Villas-Boas' side.

Lamela has been used sparingly by Villas-Boas since his arrival from Roma and has yet to start a Barclays Premier League game for Spurs but he made the difference against the reigning Moldovan champions.

Lamela put in one of his most assured performances in a Tottenham shirt and topped it off by tucking away the first goal of the game 15 minutes into the second half, before being tripped inside the box moments later to give Defoe a chance to make history from 12 yards.

The England striker converted the penalty to claim his 23rd European goal for the club, one more than Martin Chivers managed during his time at White Hart Lane.

But Spurs did not have everything their own way. For all of their defensive work, Sheriff threatened twice in the first half before Ismail Isa grabbed a goal on 72 minutes to keep Tottenham on their toes.
