Yury Slavin, 24, charged over Rundle Mall Nazi symbol display, threatened to flee country, cops say

This young man is expecting his first child, but now he’ll spend months behind bars for Nazi-related charges because of what he told police after his dramatic arrest.

A young father to be allegedly busted displaying a Nazi symbol and carrying a knife down Rundle Mall told police he’d flee the country and go somewhere his beliefs were accepted once he was released, a court has heard.

Sitting silently in the dock of the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon, 24-year-old Northfield man Yury Slavin learned he’d stay behind bars until at least April.

At about 11:30am on Saturday, police were called to Rundle Mall to reports that a man had been trying to hide a Nazi symbol and was conducting a demonstration.

Mr Slavin was arrested and charged with displaying Nazi symbol and resist police.

Once detained, police searched him and allegedly found him in possession of a knife and drug paraphernalia. He was also charged with possessing a knife in a public place.

After spending the rest of the weekend in custody, Mr Slavin, through his duty solicitor, on Tuesday asked Magistrate Roderick Jensen to release him on bail.

“He’s currently on Job Seeker but has previously worked as a floor laminator for three years,” his lawyer said.

“He resides at a residence with his mother and he has a child on the way with his partner.

“He’s able to comply with bail and report to corrections. My instructions are that he is willing to comply with all conditions.”

However, Mr Jensen said Mr Slavin had, upon his arrest, been violent in his apprehension and also told police what he planned to do after his first court hearing.

“The suggestion is that he said to police that as soon as court is over he will leave Australia and go to a country where he won’t be bothered by authorities for these symbols,” Mr Jensen said.

“Therefore he’s considered a flight risk.”

Mr Jensen declined to order a home detention bail report, and denied Mr Slavin release on any form of bail, siting him an “ongoing threat to the community” and a flight risk with a high risk of reoffending.

Mr Slavin will remain in custody until his next court appearance in April.

His arrest comes after wild scenes in Adelaide’s CBD on January 26, which saw 15 alleged members of the National Socialist Network attempting to disrupt Survival Day marches.
