A man has died after his car crashed into a tree at Warradale on Sunday afternoon, while another man is fighting for life after an accident at Magill.

At about 1.30pm on Sunday, emergency services were called to Diagonal Road, near Wilton Avenue after a Toyota 4WD left the road and crashed into a tree.

Police said despite the best efforts of emergency services, the driver, a 72-year-old Largs Bay man, died at the Warradale crash scene.

Major Crash Investigators attended to help with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the smash.

Northbound traffic on Diagonal Road was closed for about 2.5 hours.

The man’s life was the 18th lost on SA roads this year, compared with 30 at the same time last year.

Emergency services were also called to Magill Rd, Magill, about 2am on Sunday after a Toyota Corolla sedan had rolled and crashed into a tree and brick fence.

A 20-year-old Rosslyn Park man, who was alone in the car, is in a critical condition in hospital with life threatening injuries.

Magill Rd was closed until about 5.45am.

A nearby resident who heard the accident and went to help said the driver most likely hit a barricade and then a tree.

“The whole tree collapsed and the car was just in the corner on the pavement upside down.

The front of the car was completely pushed in. He was unconscious but still breathing,” the man said.

“(Emergency services) arrived here in like five or six minutes or so. Police barricaded off the area and they had to cut open the car, take him out and they treated him here for quite a while.

“You just know it’s wrong because you hear an engine and then you hear a big bang.”

Major Crash Investigators have asked anyone who saw the crash, or the vehicle beforehand, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.

In a separate incident, a 22-year-old motorcyclist from Kilkenny was badly injured in a crash also involving a Volkswagen sedan at the intersection of Regency and Main North roads, Enfield about 9.20pm on Saturday.

The motorcyclist was seriously injured and rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment.

The Volkswagen driver, a 66-year-old Fullarton woman, suffered minor injuries. She was also treated at the RAH.

The intersection was closed for several hours but was reopened about 1.30am on Sunday.

Also early on Sunday, a B-Triple truck’s rear trailer caught fire at Yantanabie, on the Eyre Hwy, about 1am leading to restrictions.

The driver was not injured but the truck’s rear trailer was destroyed and caused minor damage to the two other trailers.

The burnt-out trailer is partially obstructing the highway’s westbound lane, about 500m west of Dog Fence Rd.

Police have appealed to motorists to take care while passing through the area until the scene can be cleared.
