The man who was allegedly murdered in his cell in Yatala Labour Prison shared bizarre and troubling online messages about terrorist cults, evil demons and the illuminati before his death.

In an eponymous personal blog, Jason Douglas Wright wrote how terrorist cults had tried to take over his life, even sharing a series of peculiar photographs of his “angel and demon sides”.

“I am nephilim – a hybrid of angel and demon,” Mr Wright wrote in his blog.

Later adding, “Now I will explain the main way evil spirits gain possession over us.”

The 52-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell at 5.35pm in E-Division of the prison on Saturday.

Paramedics tried to revive Mr Wright but he was declared dead at the scene.

Benjamin Anthony Shuman, 33, of Oaklands Park was arrested, charged with murder on Sunday after the death of his cellmate the day before.

Mr Shuman is the son of Tony and Lidija Shuman who run The Popeye fleet on the River Torrens.

The boats, which have been managed by daughter Bianca Shuman since 2018, was first purchased by the family in April 2011.

Little had been known about Mr Wright, who was in custody on an assault charge.

Court records showed he had been charged with assault on December 7, 2022 at Noarlunga Centre.

It is understood he missed a court appearance and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

After being arrested on the warrant Mr Wright was remanded in custody.

He was scheduled to appear in court again on July 5.

Now, The Advertiser can reveal that Mr Wright wrote about being born in South Brisbane and moved to South Australia when he was 10-years-old.

As a teenager, Mr Wright said he was invited to play bass guitar in a thrash and grunge band, and for two years he “played gigs in backyard parties, seedy bars and hotels” across Adelaide.

Mr Wright then claimed to have “trained eight hours per day doing weights, cardio, yoga and freestyle martial arts” when he was in his 20s.

He said he was influenced by Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun Kung Fu and Ninjutsu, but gave up the intensive training after two years to train as “a spiritual warrior”.

“When I was 27-years-old I lost interest in physical training … and decided to fight with my mind and words instead.

“Bruce Lee became my saviour, messiah and mentor.”

He said he “extracted” his beliefs from “many different religious systems” and texts including paganism, the Holy Bible and illuminati conspiracy theories.

“When you think about it, we have a conscience that tells us right from wrong, and most people have good in them and desire to do the right thing,” wrote Mr Wright.

It comes as the man accused of Mr Wright’s murder, Mr Shuman is being held under an inpatient order.

He is believed to be being held in James Nash House, a closed psychiatric facility.

During a brief hearing on Monday afternoon, a duty solicitor told Magistrate Paul Foley that he had not been able to talk to Mr Shuman and asked for a date next week for a possible bail application.

Mr Foley adjourned any bail application to next week and set a next date in October for the charge of murder.
