A worker has died after falling off the roof of a steel workshop in Port Adelaide.

The Pennington man, 51, fell to his death at the Maverick Steel business on Webb St just before 11am on Saturday.

Ambulance crews treated the man but he died at the scene.

SafeWork SA officers attended the scene to investigate the incident and will release more information in the coming days, while police prepare a report for the coroner.

Friends of the man arrived at the workshop several hours after the incident and were in tears.

One friend said “he was always a happy guy”.

“He was 51 but he acted very young,” he said.

“I only saw him Monday, he was walking past (my house) and I saw him wave ... I can’t believe it.”

The friend came to the scene with a cold beer in tribute – carrying on their tradition of enjoying a casual drink together.

One other friend said it was devastating that it happened so close to Christmas.

She said the victim worked at the steel supplier for about two years.
