SOUTH Australia is just 12 months away from making a considerable mark on the world’s Motorsport landscape - with work well underway on the 7.7 kilometre The Bend Motorsport Park.
South Australian civil construction company Lucas is about three weeks into the project to build the world’s second longest permanent racetrack, creating 140 jobs.
The 4.9km international circuit is accredited to host all Motorsport except Formula 1, with Peregrine Corporation executive director Sam Shahin extremely confident the venue will host V8 Supercars and MotoGP events as early as 2018.
The $100m facility on the Dukes Highway near Tailem Bend will also feature a hotel, caravan park, camping grounds and a massive On The Run service centre.
Dr Shahin said The Bend would place South Australia firmly on the world Motorsport map.
He said the 35 turn circuit and one kilometre main straight would allow for “fantastic side-by-side action” and top speeds of up to 300km/h.
“While the racing circuit will host top level racing, it will be open to the public for a driving experience like no other,” he said.
Work on a pit building and surroundig infrastructure is also set to commence in coming months, creating another 300 jobs during the construction phase.
Premier Jay Weatherill said it was great to see the facility, expected to create 1631 full time jobs and attract 300,000 extra visitors to the region each year, take another step forward.
The project has received $7.5 million in funding from both the state and federal governments.
