Woolworths starts tearing down part of the Brickworks Market site at Torrensville

WOOLWORTHS has begun tearing down part of the Brickworks Market site at Torrensville.

WOOLWORTHS has begun tearing down part of the Brickworks Market site at Torrensville.

West Torrens Council has confirmed the supermarket giant had ticked all the right boxes to start ripping down the building.

“They had all the appropriate approvals so they have started demolition,” Mayor John Trainer said.

Woolworths owns most of the South Rd site and plans to build a new $38.5 million centre with a supermarket, Big W, Dan Murphy’s and 37 shops.

Brickworks Market traders were asked to clear out of the site last October but had been clinging to the hope they could return to the remaining council-owned portion of the site.

Mr Trainer said he wanted the council to promise traders they could return to the remainder of the site, but the council instead voted to sell it.

The council will call for expressions of interest next month.

Traders are hopeful a developer will buy the remainder of the Brickworks site, including the traders shed and the historic kiln, and keep it as a market.

The centre is expected to be completed in late 2014.
