A Kilburn woman has died after sustaining severe injuries in a house fire that erupted early on Sunday morning.

Six children aged between two and six and several adults managed to flee the fire, with at least one person was trapped behind a garage door that was cut open by a power tool.

The 23-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after police and emergency services were called to the Northcote Street home about 6am.

Her brothers, Roahullah Agha and Sadiq Agha, were left “extremely traumatised” after their house was engulfed in flames, they said.

MFS crews said 12 people were at the home, which sustained about $300,000 in damages.

The fire, which started at the rear of the property, is being investigated. Neighbours said two families lives at the home and had a barbecue on Saturday night.

Neighbour Nikki Pintelidis said she was woken at 5.30am by screaming and saw flames around the house.

Her husband began fighting the fire with a garden hose.

Another neighbour, who wishes not to be named, said she was woken by screams.

“I heard glass being shattered and popping,” she said.

The fire engulfed the rear of the home, leaving some of the family stuck behind the garage door. Neighbours said a man driving by stopped to help free the occupants.

Another Northcote St resident said the scene was traumatising.

Neighbours said the family had six children aged between two and six who managed to escape and took refuge at a nearby house.

The family moved into the home about four months ago.

This incident came after another fire at Bowden on Saturday night that broke out in a middle unit, damaging two adjoining units.

While the occupants of the Drayton Street homes and a few cats were able to escape without injury, the cause of the fire is also being investigated.
