When people think of Edinburgh, Scotland, they think of golf courses, castles, pubs, the fringe festival and the Royal Mile.
But Adelaide’s name sake suburb, located 30km north of the city, has plenty of its own charms that can entertain Opposition Leader David Speirs.
Best of all, he doesn’t need to travel more than 16,000km to experience everything our Edinburgh has to offer.
Waterloo Station Hotel assistant manager Chantelle Lang has generously offered to host Mr Speirs’ cousin’s wedding at this establishment, located on Waterloo Corner Road.
Ms Lang said the Liberal leader and his family should “come on down”, following news Mr Speirs had abandoned plans to attend a family wedding in Edinburgh, Scotland, next month.
“(We’ve got) multiple Scotch whiskies that they can come down and try. Perfect on the rocks,” Ms Lang said.
The Waterloo Station Hotel bears a similar name to Edinburgh’s iconic Apex Waterloo Place Hotel, which began hosting guestsway back in 1819.
But Ms Lang said the venue in Adelaide’s north may be better. “We’re the best in the northern suburbs, the biggest and bestpub, so I assume that our place is bigger than theirs and better,” she said.
Ms Lang said the pub has a brand new beer garden, a family-friendly restaurant, function spaces and multiple playgrounds for the children.
Now no trip is complete without sightseeing, so Mr Speirs can take the family down South Australia’s version of the Royal Mile.
In Scotland, this is a series of streets connecting the royal residences of Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. While there is no official local equivalent, a route between the Edinburgh RAAF base – the gateway to Adelaide for the royal family – and the suburb of Elizabeth, named after the late Queen, has been taken by Prince William and Princess of Wales Kate Middleton during their 2014 visit to the state.
Locals urged Mr Speirs to come for a visit.
Phuong Dinh said there were plenty of things to do in the area, including mini golf and bowling.
“The local library always has events and plays, theatre, musicals,” she said.
Levi Edwards, centre manager of Elizabeth Bowland in Edinburgh North, said South Australia’s Edinburgh was much closer – and warmer – than Scotland.
“Down your travel time by nearly a day, that’ll be handy,” he said.
He also invited the Opposition Leader to the bowling alley, vowing to whip up a hot dog and chips akin to “a Scottish-style fry up”.
“Also, while you’re here, you can come and play our 3D mini- golf, it’s pretty much the same as going to St Andrews (golf course),” Mr Edwards said.
