GORGEOUS gardens, luscious landscapes, near-perfect playgrounds and parks — all these and more have been honoured in the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects 2018 South Australian Landscape Architecture Awards.
Awards were granted to projects demonstrating high quality design, leadership and outcomes that have shaped our neighbourhoods and “realised health, social and economic benefits of greener, open and more accessible public spaces”, according to the Institute.
Categories in 2018 included civic landscape, infrastructure, play spaces, parks and open spaces, tourism, urban design, gardens, small projects and future leader.
Some of the key winning projects include the Willunga Mainstreet Project, which has transformed the town centre into a beautifully crafted setting, evoking Willunga’s natural history, local stories, settlement past and contemporary future.
Another winner was the Mukanthi nature play space at Morialta, which involved collaboration with Kaurna elders and indigenous artist Allan Sumner, to deliver inclusion of indigenous cultural stories.
The Adelaide Riverbank Precinct Public Realm was recognised for design elements including “urban green arbours, garden spaces, a flexible performance space, a playful water-feature, urban streets, laneways, courtyards and more”.
The expert jury noted in this year’s submissions the consistent design focus was people.
“People are at the core of everything landscape architects do,” the jury said.
“When we focus on the needs of people, spaces become places; they become social, and culturally rich; they require comfort and amenity, and in turn offer health benefits and improve wellbeing; they teach custodianship of the environment; and can encourage investment and economic stimulus.
“Entries received are testament to the incredible breadth of the landscape architecture profession and the diversity of skills that landscape architects have to offer. From major civic and infrastructure projects to small-scale interventions, landscape architects continue to contribute positively to the quality of life in our cities, suburbs and regional areas.”
Entries included play spaces focused on the physical and mental development of children and the creation of meaningful memories; major infrastructure works addressing human scale; places for contemplation and healing; streets for people; and across all projects, opportunities to connect with nature.
State president of the Institute Ben Willsmore says the awards demonstrate the diversity of ways landscape architects are making positive contributions to the quality of life for all South Australians.
“Each project demonstrates the important role landscape architects play in building stronger communities, through a focus on quality in design, collaboration and built outcomes,” he says.
Projects receiving an Award of Excellence and a Landscape Architecture Award proceed to the national awards on the Gold Coast in October, as part of the 2018 International Festival of Landscape Architecture.
