Wilderness School finishes review into ‘hook-up wall’ of boys by female students

WILDERNESS School has completed a review of its “wall of boys” scandal — here’s the outcome.

WILDERNESS School has completed a review of its “wall of boys” scandal, but has refused to say if any students were expelled.

The Advertiser revealed on Saturday that Year 12s at the all-girls school had created a giant photo collage of their sexual and romantic conquests in their common room, and then “shamed” the boys involved on social media.

The display was allowed to remain for most of the year.

Private-school boys complained of a double standard, saying they would have been expelled immediately for similar behaviour.

A Wilderness spokeswoman said the review was finished but it was school policy not to make public details of disciplinary action.

In a message to parents earlier this week, principal Jane Danvers said: “We will continue to work closely with all our girls to reinforce the importance of conducting their relationships and interactions, both on and offline, respectfully and with the other person in mind.”

Ms Danvers said she had met with all middle and senior school girls “to reinforce this message”, while junior school teachers would “continue to place respectful relationships at the forefront of all that they do”.

The Wilderness School girls had posted images and a slide show to social media with derogatory comments about the boys, largely from high-profile private colleges, including the hashtag “#quantitynotquality”.

One boy from a private school told The Advertiser the girls had described the display on social media as a “wall of boys” — or a “hook-up wall” — which he’d first learned about in March or April.

He said posts on Instagram and Facebook had appeared throughout the year, making fun of boys’ appearances and in some cases detailing sexual encounters. Boys had endured the embarrassment throughout the year, he said, but the slide show video — posted and shared by Wilderness girls on Facebook this week — was a step too far because it clearly identified individual boys.

Ms Danvers said the photo display was allowed to remain for most of the year because staff had deemed it “innocent and acceptable”.

It was removed after the photos appeared in an “unauthorised” Year 12 end-of-year slide show presentation, which was also posted on social media. It was later taken down.
