Wild weather sweeps across Adelaide and SA

NEARLY 20mm of rain was dumped on Adelaide in about two hours on Sunday as a tropical thunderstorm rolled over the city, suspending the Clipsal 500 and cutting power to thousands of homes.

MOTHER Nature must not have been happy about the Clipsal 500, or wanted to throw the race into chaos, sending a thunderstorm over the city just before the cars moved into position about 3.30pm.

From 3pm until 4.45pm on Sunday the Bureau of Meteorology’s Kent Town weather station received 8.6mm of rain, and then up until 5pm, another 9mm was dumped by the storm. In total, it received 22mm during the day.

There were also wind gusts of up to 41km/h recorded at 4.48pm.

Thousands of homes across the city, suburbs and regional areas were without power for hours.

The city reached its top temperature of 38C at 12.45pm.

The Clipsal 500 was suspended briefly after the safety car had already led the drivers around the track during the worst of the rain. The race was restarted but most of the day had was already over.

Adelaide driver Nick Percat eventually won the race under very slippery conditions.

The bureau has forecast a maximum of 34C for Monday, with a 40 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon and the chance of a thunderstorm.

The fire danger is high for the Mount Lofty Ranges and Adelaide Metropolitan areas.
