Why ‘old mate’ is really crying in new SA Tourism ad

He should be having the time of his life but, instead, he weeps quietly as he surveys a game of footy on a roof climb at Adelaide Oval. Why is the old man sad? Adelaide Twitter is on the case.

He should be having the time of his life but, instead, he weeps quietly as he surveys a game of footy on a roof climb at Adelaide Oval.

Why is the old man sad?

And, more importantly, why is a weeping old man the centrepiece of a major tourism campaign that is, presumably, designed to make people want to visit South Australia?

The ad itself suggests the man is sad because, while he has finally made it to the City of Churches, it comes with the profound realisation that he has left his run too late.

But many South Australians, including here at Advertiser.com.au, remain unconvinced and have taken to Twitter to submit their own theories for what’s really gotten ‘old mate’ down in the dumps. If you’ve got your own theory, tweet it using the hashtag #oldmate
