“You don’t see a southern right whale breach that many times.”

Mr Allanson has been whale-watching down at the Victor Harbour area for the past seven years and said this was only the second time he’d seen that many whales despite spending full days watching the ocean.

Researchers are trying to identify the whales using the markings on their heads.

Mr Allanson said that when whales were spotted, researchers would name them and track their movements.
