Morning O-Bahn bus commuters will no longer be able to park for free at the nearby Westfield Tea Tree Plaza car park, after centre management announced another parking area would close overnight.

In a memo to customers this week, the retail giant announced the car park adjacent to the bus interchange would not open until 8.45am each morning.

It is the latest in an ongoing stoush between Westfield and the state government, which has introduced laws that would effectively ban a paid parking scheme at the centre.

Last month, Westfield announced the overnight closure of the car park near the Myer store to prevent Modbury Hospital workers from parking for free.

Effective November 1, the car park adjacent to the bus interchange will not open until 8.45am each morning.
Effective November 1, the car park adjacent to the bus interchange will not open until 8.45am each morning.

“Since adjusting the opening time of the Myer car park, we have received positive feedback from community on the improved availability of parking bays,” the latest memo said.

“However, bay availability remains significantly impacted by commuters and workers.

“In response, from Tuesday 1 November, our car park adjacent to the O-Bahn Bus Interchange will open at 8.45am.”Centre workers would still be able to access the car park before 8.45am by displaying their staff parking permit.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said his government’s policy to ban paid parking enjoyed “overwhelming support from thousands upon thousands of people that live in and around that community”.

“I’ve been out on the ground, talking to people that shop at Westfield Tea Tree Plaza … and it is almost impossible to find people who genuinely think that the installation of boom gates is in anyone’s interests apart from Westfield’s bottom line,” he told ABC Radio Adelaide on Tuesday morning.

The legislation has already passed the lower house but it will not be brought to a vote in the upper house this week.
