West Beach Surf Lifesaving Club unveils first pictures of its proposed new $5.878m facility

It’s been a long time coming, but the West Beach Surf Lifesaving club has finally unveiled the first pictures of its proposed new $5.9m facility. Take a look.

Five things that shock tourists about Australia

Plans for a $5.878m redevelopment of the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club have been unveiled, with the club saying this will be a facility to service the community for the next 50 years.

The West Beach club is the final one to be upgraded within the City of Charles Sturt as part of the Plexus program, which outlined a development program for surf life saving facilities in SA and was commissioned in 2002 by Surf Life Saving South Australia.

The redevelopment of the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club has been delayed in recent years, as the club explored other possible locations for their clubroom due to the uncertainly of beach access to and from their existing building.

But the recent announcement from the state government to introduce additional sand stock into West Beach was the deciding factor for the club to remain at their existing location.

Architects working on the project and club members presented the project’s concept images to Charles Sturt council at its meeting on Monday night.

Club life member and chairwoman of the redevelopment working group Melissa Davis-Bishop said the club is a community hub for many hundreds of members.

“We have the most patrolling members of any surf lifesaving club in South Australia,” she said.

“While this project has been a long road, we’re really excited with how it is progressing.

“We see this as the next building that will see the West Beach Surf Lifesaving Club into the next 50 years.”

Walterbrooke architect Max Parker said the ground floor level, entered into off Seaview Rd, would include a new function area, cafe, kitchen and bar.

“The public toilets will be integrated into the new building and the existing toilets will be removed as part of the project,” he said.

The lower level will feature a gym, training room, female and male change rooms, a first aid area and plenty of storage for the club’s equipment.

Funding for the project is coming from a mix of state government, council and club funding.

The club is undertaking a voluntary community engagement process before it lodges a formal development application with council.

About 100 nearby residents will be letterboxed this week about plans for the redevelopment.

The club hopes to have plans formally lodged in early June.
