South Australia blanketed with heavy fog, causing international flights to be diverted

Travellers are being urged to check for delays out of Adelaide Airport as low-hanging fog blankets the city.

A heavy blanket of low-hanging fog has caused international flights to be diverted interstate, as drivers are warned to take extra care on the roads.

An Adelaide Airport spokesman told The Advertiser that two international flights – Vietjet from Perth and Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur – have been diverted to Melbourne due to difficulty landing as a result of the fog.

Additionally, Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore and a Qantas flight from Melbourne spent some time circling the airport – however they have since landed.

Adelaide Airport expects there may be further disruptions to Saturday morning arrivals and departures, urging travellers to check with airlines for the latest flight information.

The Bureau of Meteorology senior spokesman Simon Timcke alerted of the dangerous conditions, however, promised clear overhead skies later on Saturday.

“We’re having pretty widespread fog across the Adelaide area this morning – making road conditions a bit hazardous too,” he told ABC Adelaide.

“Looking at the satellite picture, it extends over most of the metropolitan area and the western slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges,” Mr Timcke said.

“When the fog is fairly extensive like that, it usually does take a little bit longer to clear, so it’ll probably be with us through a good part of the morning.”

He said “over the top of the fog” there didn’t seem to be any clouds which means there’ll be a bit of sunshine across the state.

SA Police also asked drivers to take extra care on the roads, particularly in the central and northern suburbs.

They recommend motorists to “slow down and take extra care”, “maintain a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front”, as well as turning “on your headlights”.

The forecast for the remainder of Saturday will climb to a top of 18C in Adelaide, with a medium chance of showers developing in late morning before clearing in the evening.

Similarly, on Sunday temperatures will reach a top of 18C and bring a high chance of showers.
