A “hazardous fog” shrouded parts of Adelaide this morning, with drivers warned to take extra care on the roads.

Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Chris Kent said Adelaide’s chilly nights and wet mornings are expected to continue for a while longer, and warned of the fog in the north.

“We’ve had another cool start across Adelaide this morning,” Mr Kent said on ABC Adelaide Radio.

“We got down to about 5C in the city, and a little bit cooler a bit further north.

“We had a little bit of rain as well overnight, 1.2mm picked up in the city and Mount Lofty picked up 1.4 – so not a lot but enough to cause a little bit of fog about this morning, particularly in the northern suburbs.”

SA Police issued a road weather alert for Adelaide as the fog is expected to reduce road visibility.

Motorists are advised to slow down and take extra care, maintain a safe distance with the vehicle in front and turn on their headlights.

The BOM’s weather forecast for the weekend shows a continuation of those wintry patterns.

On Saturday temperatures will climb to a top of 16C with patchy fog remaining until the afternoon.

On Sunday, the temperature will reach 17C with clouds hanging about and bringing showers in the afternoon and evening. Light winds will reach 15 to 20km/h in the afternoon.

However, Mr Kent revealed next week to bring in warmer conditions.

“We got a ridge sitting over the state early in the week so pretty clear conditions for a couple of days – with temperatures starting to increase a little bit as we head into the week,” he said.

“But the next front will be moving through on Thursday and so we’ll see a little bit of rainfall come back after that.”
