The Country Fire Service is fighting a grass fire in the Riverland which is expected to continue burning for the next several days.

Just after 4pm, CFS crews were called to Taylorville, a township roughly 80km west of Renmark with a population of more than 10,000.

More than 20 firefighters and six trucks were supported by local residents with machinery to bring the fire under control.

However, the CFS said the fire has spread to section of inaccessible swamp land along the edge of the River Murray.

The fire is causing smoke to drift in and around the township of Waikerie.

The CFS advised nearby residents to close doors and windows and to stay indoors if necessary, as well as taking care if driving through smoke.

It said the trees currently alight pose no threat to the community and crews will continue to monitor the scene.

On Monday night, the CFS attended five other blazes across the state amid a wave of hot and dry weather.
