Walkerville YMCA's child care programs in doubt following Walkerville Council order

UP TO 70 children could lose out of hours or holiday care at the Walkerville YMCA, the groups says.
Inner North East of Adelaide YMCA president Tony Pederick said the YMCA had received an enforcement notice from Walkerville Council directing them to stop the programs because it did not have development approval.
"It said that vacation care doesn't fall into the recreation category and they want us to cease doing it," Mr Pederick told the City North Messenger.
He said holiday care had been offered during school holidays at the Smith St centre for more than 20 years.
Numbers ranged from 20 up to 70, he said.
"Vacation care is a very important part of the YMCA," he said.
"The activity has been going on at the Y forever."
But Walkerville Mayor Heather Wright said the YMCA did not have council approval to care for children in the building.
The YMCA would need to resubmit a new application in order for the program to continue running at the centre, she said.
"If they change what they're doing, they need to get approval for it," she said.
